I had been working in youth sports and entertainment brands since 1992 since I graduated from college. I coached soccer at some of the most prestigious clubs in Massachusetts was part of a team that won a national championship and developed many players who went on to MLS. When my son and daughter were born, my focus became fatherhood and I took on the role of parent.
Thankfully, I had perspective as a coach which made me a parent that understood the role of a parent, but many of my fellow parents didn’t seem to get the memo. I ended up coaching my kids in sports through high school and I remember how much I cried the day my son played his last hockey game for Arlington Catholic.
During that time I had the pleasure of helping run my son’s hockey club for the two owners. They were good at hockey, and I was good at business. I took my best practices in business, doubled their revenues, increased their customer retention by 50% and also built multiple programs and platforms to help them grow.
By the time my son aged out, I learned enough to say, I want to start my own club, and thus, the Boston Imperials were born. From there, I founded Boston Hockey Academy, the first residential sports academy in Massachusetts.
We had growth, on ice success, and got a lot of positive press for being known as a progressive club that looked at sports a different way. Unfortunately, we also had a tragedy due to the loss of a player under our care.
It was heartbreaking and humbling and from then on, I took that energy and said, how can I create a true platform to un-break youth sports and ensure there is support for every student-athlete and participant that wears our uniforms. Part of that support requires educating parents, operating top-notch programming and providing professional management and advice to everyone we work with.
It was then that Bright Matter Sports & Entertainment was born.
